Patent valuation

Understand the principles of patent valuation
Discover the economic, legal and strategic challenges associated with the valorization of a patent. This first step helps to understand what an intellectual property (IP) asset is, why it creates value, and how its valuation fits into the overall business context.
Mastering assessment methods adapted to IP
Learn how to apply the main approaches used to evaluate a patent: historical costs, the comparable license market, and future economic flows. You will see how to choose the appropriate method based on technological maturity, remaining protection period and operational potential.
Apply the method to a practical case
Through a real case, you will carry out a complete evaluation of a patent step by step: collection of historical costs, replacement costs, estimation of future revenues, calculation of the royalty rate, and sensitivity analysis. You will learn how to interpret the results and present a clear summary to an investor, auditor, or judge.
What is a patent and why should it be evaluated?
A patent is an intangible asset that gives its owner an exclusive right to exploit an invention. The purpose of evaluating a patent is to estimate its economic value, whether it is exploited directly, licensed to third parties, contributed to a company, or used as collateral.
Why train in patent valuation?
Patents represent a growing part of the value of innovative businesses. Knowing how to assess them makes it possible to reinforce the credibility of a fundraising project, a technology transfer or a fiscal audit. This training provides the necessary tools to understand, quantify and defend the value of a patent in a concrete economic context.
A methodical and concrete approach
At Hectelion, we designed this training to be immediately operational. Each module alternates theory, case studies and manipulation of an Excel evaluation model. You leave with concrete tools, a comprehensive glossary and a methodology applicable to any type of intangible asset.
MODULE 1
Introduction to intellectual property and patents
Understand the legal foundations of patents, their life cycle, their geographical scope and the criteria for the protection of an invention.
MODULE 2
Preparing and framing the evaluation of a patent
Identify the patents to be evaluated, collect technical, legal and financial documents, and define the exact scope of the analysis (owner, territory, use, remaining term).
MODULE 3
Cost-based methods
Reconstruct historical development costs (R&D, prototyping, testing, testing, filing, PCT extension), then adjust these costs to reflect market values and possible amortization.
MODULE 4
Market-based methods
Compare with recent transactions, licenses, or similar patent sales. Identify relevant databases and calculate the market value by analogy.
MODULE 5
Revenue-based methods
Evaluate a patent using a synthetic royalty rate derived from the company's internal economic parameters (margin, technological dependence, risks). Project future flows and update their value according to the sectoral WACC.
MODULE 6
Royalty rate method
Calculate and derive the value of the patent from a royalty rate observed on comparable transactions or licenses. Determine the economic value of royalty savings discounted to WACC.
MODULE 7
Construction of the WACC and patent-specific adjustments
Determine the appropriate discount rate by integrating risks related to patent life, technological competition, and the likelihood of commercial success.
MODULE 8
Summary and evaluation report
Present a professional valuation: structure of the report, comparative graphs, sensitivity table, key hypotheses and reasoned conclusion.
MODULE 9
Q&A and final quiz
Validate the achievements of the day through an interactive session and a summary quiz to consolidate the understanding of the approaches.
MODULE 10
A comprehensive patent valuation case
Appliquer toutes les méthodes à un cas concret : collecte des coûts, projection des revenus, application du taux de redevance, calcul de la valeur actualisée et interprétation des écarts entre approches.
For managers, innovation managers, intellectual property lawyers, financial experts and entrepreneurs who want to understand how to value their patents or technologies.
