Benford's Law (digital analysis)

Benford's Law is a statistical law used to detect anomalies or fraud in numerical data: in naturally occurring datasets, leading digits follow a predictable, non-uniform distribution, and significant deviations from that pattern signal figures that may have been fabricated or manipulated. As a digital analysis technique, it is applied systematically to large accounting datasets to identify statistical anomalies inconsistent with naturally occurring distributions. Its application in financial due diligence and forensic accounting extends beyond fraud detection to encompass data quality assessment, system integrity testing and internal control evaluation.
