Equity payback point

The equity payback point denotes the moment, usually well after operational break-even, at which cumulative profits since that break-even have fully repaid the cumulative losses funded by investors since the company's formation.

This concept differs from operational break-even, which only measures the point at which operations stop consuming cash over a given period. The equity payback point factors in the full capital contributed by investors from inception: a startup can reach operational break-even several years before its shareholders have recovered, through accumulated profits, the total amount they invested.

Simple illustration: a startup burns CHF 3,000,000 of cumulative losses before reaching operational break-even, then generates CHF 600,000 of annual profit thereafter. The equity payback point only arrives five years later, once those cumulative profits have offset the full CHF 3,000,000 invested, well after day-to-day operations had already turned profitable.
