Quantum refers, in legal proceedings and judicial financial expert mandates, to the quantified monetary amount of a claim or loss — the precise financial measure of damages sought or awarded. Determining the quantum is the central objective of financial expert mandates in commercial litigation: it requires quantifying actual losses already incurred (damnum emergens), future profits lost (lucrum cessans) and, where applicable, loss of chance. The quantum is established through rigorous financial analysis, submitted to the adversarial principle and defended before courts or arbitral tribunals.

Example: in a post-acquisition dispute regarding a warranty breach, Hectelion is mandated to determine the quantum of damages. Analysis establishes: damnum emergens CHF 340,000 (depreciated stocks + remediation costs) + lucrum cessans CHF 1.85 million (5-year projected lost contract revenue discounted at WACC) = total quantum CHF 2.19 million.
